9/11/2007 Homework solutions (prepared by myself or one of the TAs)to the Giancoli problems will be available shortly after due dates. Instructions for accessing them are on the web page.

9/10/2007 You should have completed the Units homework set by now. Of the 200+ student enrolled, only 153 have registered for MasteringPhysics, and 40+ of those have not completed the assignment. Let me reiterate: 1) Doing the homework is a requirement for this course. You will not be allowed to take the exam if you have not completed the homework. I will be totally inflexible on this point. 2) It is extremely rare for students who do poorly on the homework to do well on the exams. 3) If you "complete" the homework by simply entering gibberish into MasteringPhysics, you are only hurting yourself. Every problem you blow off with gibberish should be a reminder to you of this.

Some of you had an excellent high school physics course. Good for you. You think this stuff is so easy that there is no point in doing the homework. Bad for you. Every year a lot of students take this attitude and discover the truth when they bomb the first exam. If you really know this stuff, the homework problems should be easy for you and you should be able to do them in 30 minutes or less. It seems to me that taking 30 minutes a week to bone up on your skills is a worthwhile investment of time.

Remember,

The Fool says in his heart
`No homework for me'

9/7/2007 The solution given in MasteringPhysics for Problem 1.34 is incorrect. The correct answer, using the MasteringPhysics numbers, is 5.8 s. The 9.1 s answer given on the web site is what you get if you assume that only the difference in heights of the two observations is important. But that is a poor assumption for the numbers given.

9/6/2007 Information on honors credit for 201 is now posted on the course web page. There are 3 choices of things to do for the honors credit.

9/5/2007 The homework assignments labelled "Practice" are additional problems for your enrichment only. You are not required to do them. The "due date" on them is irrelevant.

The mastering physics course id is given on the 201 web page

If the scheduled exam times conflict with an evening class you are taking, you need to notify Thad well in advance.
